ye soch ke baithi hun, ek raah to wo hogi
tum tak jo pahuchti hai, is mod se jaate hain
-Gulzar
The devious lyrics Gulzar penned down for this gem of a song from Aandhi never fails to amaze me.
An inspired interpretation-
Is mod se jaate hain
kuch sust qadam raste, kuch tez qadam raahein
[Right from this point (Is mod), where we are now, there go a multiple lanes; some are fast paced (suiting to the character of Suchitra Sen in the movie) and some are laid back (Sanjeev Kumar's)]
patthar ki haveli ko,
sheeshe ke gharondon me,
tinkon ke nasheman tak
is mod se jaate hain
[further explaining the choices of which lanes to take, 'patthar ki haveli' signifying a stable lavish ending, 'sheeshe ke gharonde' signifying a beautiful but not stable and 'tinkon ke nasheman' suggesting fragile ending. Thus, these lanes can lead to a variety of end choices such as the three explained above. Again emphasizing on multitude of options.]
aandhi ki tarah ud kar, ek raah guzarti hai
sharmaati hui koi, qadmon se utarti hai
in reshmi raahon me, ek raah to wo hogi
tum tak jo pahuchti hai, is mod se jaate hain
[Some lanes are aggressive as wind, some are shy. However, out of these smooth lanes (why reshmi?), there must be at least one choice that would lead to you]
ek dur se aati hai, paas aake palat-ti hai
ek raah akeli si, rukti hai na chalti hai
ye soch ke baithi hun, ek raah to wo hogi,
tum tak jo pahuchti hai, is mod se jaate hain
[One of the choices is even deceiving and one is misleading and lonely. I just hope that still, one of these many lanes WILL lead to you.]
Out an out a Gulzar’s movie. One of the best all time songs (equally great contribution by RD Burman) and direction. My favorite. Was loosely based on Indira Gandhi’s life they say.
