People who defined 2008 – III

  • Ajmar Ali and Mumbai attacks
  • The devilish terrorist attacks resurfaced the wounds. The picture of sole terrorist captured must have circulated a million times online and will keep haunting the Indians for a long time. More pictures here.

  • Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Saurav Ganguly and Anil Kumble
  • With IPL, there was hell lot of cricket played on Indian soil this year. It is a transitional phase as some say that Twenty20 is the future. Lifting Indian test team to 2nd position was a big achievement for Dhoni and wouldn’t be possible without Yuvraj Singh’s knocks. As Ganguly and Kumble retired, India hailed the ex-captains and two of the most successful cricketers ever. The Bengal Tiger would be sorely missed.

    Quoting from an article-

When he raised his bat after his last century and his 16th one overall, even his worst critics knew, they had misjudged him horribly wrong in the past. God may or not be on the off-side, but at least he was right for a change in ensuring poetic justice.

But overall a phenomenal year for Men in blue (except for Bhajji’s slapping episode!).

  • George Bush and Muntadhar al-Zaidi
  • This can happen only to Bush and he did what he could – dodge. The ‘shoe-thrower’ has become an instant hero for all Bush haters.

  • Jintao, Liu Qi and Zhang Yimou
  • Spectacular and controversial Beijing Olympics showed China’s expertise and meticulousness. However, Tibet issue still haunts.

  • Ingrid Betancourt
  • Rescued after 6 yrs of captivity, the former Colombian presidential hopeful received many honors and continued her appeals against the FARC rebels.

  • Justine Henin

  • And finally, the most stunning retirement announcement from the Belgian sports star. Looking at the dismal run by WTA this year, I would still pick her for the ‘most celebrated, talked about and missed’ in 2008 womens’ tennis circuit.
