“you know” – yeah Roger, we know

RF after his victory over Soderling

Roger Federer is sailing smooth on the Wimby lawns and that is making me concerned. I hope he gets tested well before reaching the finals and that he peaks at the right time. These easy early victories may not do him good and I look forward to at least one 5 setter in his upcoming clashes. He is doing just solid in the tie breaks and serve percentages.

The best part is he is finally looking at peace against everything. The class he shows in Grand Slams is just unparalleled – the guy has been playing so consistently in Slams that it seems he has been there forever while others have struggled with injuries, form, momentum and personal tensions. You may call it luck but even that runs out after sometime. The way he has maintained himself physically and psychologically is phenomenal. I know I had cringed seeing his dismal performances in ATP Masters’ series but when I come to think of it, I don’t think its about those titles anymore now. When it comes to 5 setters, you got to have God on your side to beat Roger Federer – ask Tommy Haas and Del Potro.

Of course, media is not liking that Rafa has had some problems come up. And, you can find a bunch of articles underscoring how Roger might be a better player in terms of numbers but Rafa is a better ‘everything else’! I guess until Fed beats Rafa in a Grand Slam, the disgusting comparisons will not stop. The guy even said that ‘he knew once Rafa is out, he can win’ – what else do you want him to say? It’s not his fault that Rafa lost early out of injury or personal tension or whatever. Has anyone tried to compare them on terms of consistency? Federer never gave way to any external factor when he made semi-finals and finals in every Grand Slam over last 5 years. Sigh. Anyways, give him a break, he deserves better than these silly comparisons.

And that brings me to the Wimbledon 5 setter between Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka today. Only yesterday in my article at MTF, I had written that we are yet to see a thriller like last year’s Murray vs Gasquet and here was my wish fulfilled already. Murray might want to find a better rhythm for Quarters and Semis to avoid giving many Britons a heart attack. Djoker Vs Haas and Fed Vs Karlovic may turn out to be thrilling if all the players deliver their best. And in WTA, I am all ‘go Venus’!
