If you picked a newspaper — oh I forgot they are obsolete now!. I mean if you read news or blogs within last week, you would know about the bitter Google Vs China cyberwar. Google took a fancy stance (that of course only a company with such huge stature can afford) by declaring that it will uncensor its search engine in China or move out. Although morally applauded for standing against the ‘human rights violating’ Chinese laws, Google’s motivations appear to be coming from avenging the harsh cyber laws it has long faced in the country. The recently discovered large scale cyber attacks/spying merely gave Google a wound to gain sympathy for.
What amuses me is this — First, is Google acknowledging that its system was vulnerable enough to be breached by Chinese nerds. Or was it someone on the inside? Either way, the intelligent think tank Google seems to be relying on China’s mercy. What is Google appealing to — Chinese govt’s ethical standards? We know they are practically non-existent. Second, the issue is in highlight because Internet is practically dominated by American companies and they can find evidence of foreign government’s cyber snooping. I can’t believe that any country will not go to whatever extent it can on the name of security. US does it, Russia does it, European countries do it. Probably there’s no easy way to prove it in case of these countries. The bottomline is — these attacks were deplorable but using them to just point fingers at China is absurd and futile. Google should indeed pull out if it thinks that will prevent the attacks. But China is too big a market to let go. The cyber attacks are a part of the Internet and raise as much hue and cry you may, they will persist. Probably the next James Bond movie ‘With love from China’ will feature a Geisha cum hacker Chinese beauty. And that reminds me when is the next Bond flick releasing, its been too long without Daniel Craig!
