In adulation of whom, The Ghalib himself had written-
Rekhta ke tum hi ustaad nahi ho ‘Ghalib’
Kehte hain agle zamane me koi ‘Meer’ bhi tha
rekhta=urdu
Given Ghalib’s pride and snob, the compliment above is a rare feat. A beautiful ghazal of Meer Taqi Meer was molded by Khayyam for the movie Bazar-
The original ghazal goes as follows, the translated ashaar are the ones used in the song-
faqiraana aaye sadaa kar chale
miyaan khush raho ham dua kar chale
jo tujh bin na jine ko kehte the ham
so is ahd ko ab wafaa kar chale
koi naa-ummeedaana karte nigaah
so tum ham se muun bhi chhipa kar chale
bahut aarzoo thi gali ki teri
so yaas-e-lahu me nahaa kar chale
[yaas-e-lahu = blood of dejection/sorrow/fear
I craved thus for your lane that I came bathed in blood => I longed to get to you but the yearning remained unfulfilled?
probably, need better clarification on this one]
dikhayi diye yun ki bekhud kiya
hamein aap se bhi juda kar chale
[Looking at you made me lose myself thus that I have become a stranger to my soul]
zabeen sajdaa karte hi karte gayi
haq-e-bandagi hum adaa kar chale
[My forehead continued bowing so much that it seems my dues to the God are paid]
parastish ki yaan tak ki aye but tujhe
nazar me sabon ki Khudaa kar chale
[yaan - yahan
Look at the extent of my adulation that I have made you God in everyone's vision]
gayi umr dar band-e-fikr-e-Ghazal
so is fan ko aisas badaa kar chale
kahen kya jo poochhe koi ham se Meer
jahaan me tum aaye the, kya kar chale

koi rishta nahi raha fir bhi, ek tasleem laazmi si hai
aaj fir aapki kami si hai
